Competitive battles in Pokémon Legends: Z-A are about to get a major shake-up.

Ranked Battles Season 8 introduces a special format built entirely around Mega Evolution, limiting teams to Pokémon with newly discovered Mega forms. At the same time, the season offers one of the most rewarding competitive ladders yet, allowing players to earn large amounts of Mega Shards simply by participating and climbing the ranks.

With Mega Stones and upgrade materials available through the reward system, this short competitive season could become one of the most valuable events for Trainers looking to strengthen their teams.

Ranked Battles Season 8 Start Date

The special competitive season will run for just over three weeks.

Event Duration

March 11, 2026 – April 1, 2026
Start Time: 11:00 PM PDT
End Time: 6:59 PM PDT

During this period, Trainers will compete in four-player real-time online battles, facing opponents from around the world while progressing through the ranked ladder.

Players begin at Rank Z and can climb all the way to Rank A, the highest tier available during the season.

Season 8 Rules – A Mega Evolution Format

Season 8 introduces a competitive ruleset that dramatically changes team building.

Only Pokémon with new Mega Evolutions discovered in Pokémon Legends: Z-A or the Mega Dimension DLC are allowed in battle.

Other key rules include:

  • Pokémon from Lv.1–Lv.100 may be registered

  • All Pokémon are automatically set to Lv.50 during battles

  • Only one Pokémon per Pokédex number is allowed

Because of these restrictions, many traditional competitive strategies will not be viable, forcing players to build teams entirely around Mega Evolution mechanics.

Held Item Restrictions

Season 8 also introduces a unique item limitation.

Pokémon can only hold Mega Stones discovered in Lumiose City or Hyperspace Lumiose.

No other held items are allowed, meaning traditional competitive staples like recovery items or stat-boosting items are removed from the format.

This design ensures that Mega Evolution remains the central mechanic of every battle.

Ranked Promotion Rewards – Mega Stones

As players climb the ranked ladder, they will unlock several Mega Stones as promotion rewards.

These include:

  • Greninjite

  • Delphoxite

  • Chesnaughtite

  • Baxcalibrite

  • Sceptilite

  • Swampertite

  • Blazikenite

For players who missed previous events or want to unlock additional Mega Evolutions, climbing the ranked ladder can be an efficient way to obtain these stones.

Season 8 Rewards – Mega Shards

The biggest incentive this season is the Mega Shard reward system.

Players earn Mega Shards through both rank promotions and final season rewards, allowing active competitors to accumulate a significant amount of this currency.

Final season rewards are distributed based on rank.

Rank A
Mega Shard ×300

Rank B – Rank E
Mega Shard ×200

Rank F – Rank R
Mega Shard ×100

Rank S and Below
Mega Shard ×50

Mega Shards can be exchanged for several valuable items, including Mega Stones and leveling materials.

Fastest Way to Farm Mega Shards

For players aiming to maximize Mega Shard rewards before the season ends, a few strategies can make the climb more efficient.

Play consistently early in the season

Early matchmaking tends to be less competitive, making it easier to climb ranks quickly.

Focus on strong Mega attackers

Offensive Mega Pokémon can help end battles faster and secure more consistent wins.

Secure promotion rewards first

Even if reaching Rank A is difficult, simply progressing through multiple ranks still grants Mega Shards and Mega Stones.

Because promotion rewards stack with final season rewards, active players can accumulate far more Mega Shards than the season ranking alone suggests.

Best Pokémon for Ranked Battles Season 8

While the full competitive meta will evolve as players experiment with teams, several Mega Evolution Pokémon are already expected to perform well.

Mega Greninja

Extremely fast and capable of applying heavy offensive pressure.

Mega Blaziken

One of the most explosive attackers in the format with strong momentum potential.

Mega Swampert

A balanced choice with excellent durability and strong offensive presence.

Mega Sceptile

A fast special attacker that can quickly eliminate fragile threats.

Because the format heavily favors Mega Evolution, these Pokémon are likely to appear frequently in high-rank battles.

Eligible Pokémon List

The Season 8 rules limit players to specific Pokémon entries from the Lumiose Pokédex and Hyperspace Pokédex.

Examples of eligible Pokémon include:

  • Lumiose Pokédex No. 003, 006, 009

  • 035, 037, 039 (Eternal Flower Floette only)

  • 044, 046, 054 (Alolan Raichu excluded)

  • 057, 070, 076, 121

  • 130, 134, 136

  • 144, 147, 160 and more

Additional Pokémon from the Hyperspace Pokédex are also allowed.

Because only Pokémon with newly discovered Mega Evolutions are permitted, team building will revolve heavily around these specific species.
